Default Relay setting with xx.com

I'm trying to define the default relay. The manual seems to imply I can use a URL address ie xx.yy.com rather than an ip address 1.2.3.4

If I use the IP Address then PMG accepts the email and forwards correctly to the main mail server
If I use the URL address then it rejects the email with

550 5.5.1 Protocol error

Any ideas?

hm - I'd expect a hostname (technically not an url - i.e. my.pmg.com should work not smtp://my.pmg.com) to work just as well as an IP - please share the complete logs from PMG - these should who where things go wrong
