Hey guys,

I'm going to be moving my bare metal server to Proxmox, and then joining it to another Proxmox server (for a total of 2, no HA requirements).

I have purchased several Crucial BX500 (360TB TBW) consumer grade SSDs, with the view to replace them later with enterprise grade if needs be.
Server has 128gb RAM available to it.

I basically need a sanity check.

The proposed setup will be:
  • Proxmox
  • UnRAID VM (only for NAS purposes)
  • Main Ubuntu VM

  • Proxmox OS:
    • 2x 1TB SSD (ZFS mirror via Proxmox)
  • VM's:
    • 2x 1TB SSD (ZFS mirror via Proxmox)

Are there any considerations that I need to think of?
I see from several posts that ZFS can wear out SSDs quite quickly due to write amplification, and there are some potential mitigations that can be implemented to reduce this?

So something like a pi zero acting as a qdevice?
Not tested by me, but we know a "normal" Raspberry can do it, so the zero may work too. Has it a copper NIC? I would not accept WLAN for this task...

A VM on some other device (like a NAS-Station) would also work.

As soon as I posted, I was thinking "wlan is a dumb choice for this", although usb to ethernet adapter could work.

I'll have to dig through my spares box to see if I have any forgotten pi's lying around! Thanks for the heads up!
