Hi All,

I have backup's of VM's from 3.4 version. Now I have installed 4.2 version on my server. The local and local-lvm are the two default pools for the installation of 4.2 proxmox. Earlier 3.4 version, all the vm's path's were /var/lib/vz. Now in 4.2 version, the local storage has only 96 GB for local and local -thin is having 3.6 TB. My vm backup is 150 GB and I cannot copy the vm to new version 4.2 (/var/lib/images). Could you please advise me on where to copy the vms in 4.2 version.

Thanks,

RV

Hi Dietmar, thank you for your response. I have a backup of 3.4 from /var/lib/vz/images. If I am restoring back to 4.2 lvm-thin what would be the path I would need to restore it.

Could you please advise.

Do you have vzdump backups or just a copy of the virtual disk directory?

Hi Tom, thank you for your reply.

I have just the copy of virtual disk directory.

Thanks,

do you have a temporary NFS server with enough space?

if yes, create a new VM, and use the virtual disk copied on this NFS. as soon as you got this, you can "move disk" to the lvm thin.

Hi Tom, thank you. please find my server disk lay out of Proxmox 4.2. I want to give you some back ground, Before proxmox 4.2, I was using proxmox 3.4, I have decided to upgrade it to 4.2. Before I started upgrading it, I took, directory level backup of vm's under (/var/lib/vz/images) to a external hard disk. but the inplace upgrade failed. I rebuilt the server from scratch. After I installed the machine, I see local(96 GB) and lvm-thin @ 3.54 TB and my hard disk capacity is 4 TB. Now, I want to copy these vm's to proxmox 4.2, that I have backed up to the /var/lib/vz/images, unfortunately, I do not have space. I am unsure under which path I need to copy these vm's to, if I am copying it to lvm-thin.
Could you please advise.

first, you have to decide if you want to use lvm-thin or not. if you are unsure, go for it.

howto (short):
1. attach your harddisk, mount and add this one as directory storage via the gui.
2. create new VMs and manually edit the config file and point your old disks to this new VM
3. now, you will see the virtual disks and you can "move disk" to the lvm-thin storage

Next time, please do a vzdump backup instead of a copy of the VM images. Then you can restore to ANY storage, with one click.
