container not being seen by router

I installed Proxmox and a container with Home Assistant. I added (not sure if I should have) gnome to proxmox. I am now trying to create a second container with debian and a variety of desktops, just to try them. I have created the new container with Debian and added a network device Vmbr0 VirtO and have a mac address assigned....No vlan and firewall is not checked. This mirrors what I have working in home assistant.

My problem is that while I can see the home assistant container MAC address on the router...I can't find the Debian container MAC address....so there is no way to get to that container from the network....and when I start the proxmox system, I get a linux sign on screen but I can't tell if it's the debian in Proxmox or the container I added.....Note: the debian container hardware-->display is set to default.

I would love to simplify by getting rid of the gnome desktop I added to the proxmox base. I tried reinstalling proxmox from scratch, but even booting from a USB stick with the proxmox iso, I never could get to the install Proxmox screens....the system just came up with the debian login screen.

I am admittedly a newby to Proxmox and very much a lightweight at Linux....so likely I've missed something easy (I hope). Any help appreciated.

if you have another computer on the same network as proxmox - try logging into the proxmox gui

e.g if the proxmox server was installed with an ip of 192.168.1.10 then use https://192.168.1.10:8006 (any warning message about insecure access or invalid certificates are normal)

if you don't have another computer then login to the debian gnome desktop and try https://localhost:8006

I can get to proxmox panel using ip:8006....that's not the problem.

I have a display connected to my Proxmox system. When I boot the system, the attached display comes up with the debian desktop.....however...I believe that it's the gnome desktop I added to proxmox....NOT the debian container.

How do I work with the container debian either from the display on the proxmox system or another computer/display?

a container system will generally only have terminal access. You will need to use the console window in Proxmox or use an SSH terminal program like Putty from your desktop

but I don't see an IP for the debian container??? I can putty into proxmox....but how do I putty into the debian container?

I should be able to set up two linux containers with desktops and be able to connect my display to either one. How do I do that?

chalk this up to beginner stupidity. I didn't actually install Debian in the container. I now have two containers, one with home assistant, one with Debian....both have their own IP addresses. issue resolved.
