Confused about user management

I just read through the documentation for user management and I'm missing a fundamental understanding of some aspect of it. I want to create an admin user instead of doing everything as root. I created a user 'brian' and added them to the Adminstrators group. However, I cannot log in as that user. If I go to permissions→users→password and try and change the password for user 'brian' I get an error that the user doesn't exist, despite the user showing up as the only other user other than root. I created an administrator pool and added all my Vms and storage. Is there something I need to do to actually 'activate' a user?

That would probably explain it. Why is it in the GUI if it's non-functional? Is there something the GUi provides in regards to use management?

Also, ever since I created a pool and assigned the new user 'brian' to it, I've not been able to create resources. Is that because the user assigned to that pool doesn't exist since the user was only added in the GUI and not the shell?

Maybe. I haven't tried adding a user for now. My Proxmox is like 4 months old so haven't tried a lot of things yet.
