Confused about CPU type to purchase for OpenVZ containers only

I am putting together specs for a server to run Proxmox but I am not 100% positive on the CPU I need.
I will only be running OpenVZ containers only. I don't want to spend the money and find out that Proxmox won't install.

I am testing on an AMD phenom and Proxmox installed. However I still don't know if this CPU is 64 bit as I have only ever installed a 32 bit OS on it. I'm confused :)

Should I be looking for VT capable CPUs? 64 bit only? 64 bit architecture? Can I use Xeon and which generation? Is there a difference?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
you need for proxmox a 64bit cpu. If you only use OpenVZ you don't need the cpu-hardwarevirtualisation. The amd phenom has both: 64bit and virtualisation - and i would never buy today a cpu without (for a server, or so). In this case you can use both virtualisations.
