Hello, im new in virtualization and proxmox. I have small home server: i5 4460 , 16GB RAM , and three discs : 1 x 160GB HDD, 2x 240GB SSD Intel , NIC with Quad Gigabit port. I would like to achieve max safe to VM data ( 2 windows vm ). I created onboard fake RAID 1 with SSD discs but in proxmox i can't see this array to add storage. Can i install proxmox from ISO on 160GB HDD and create software RAID1 (mdadm) to storage for VM ? How about performance ?

mdadm software RAID is not supported and Proxmox VE and you cannot install directly on it. You can, however, install on the supported software RAID using ZFS directly from the installer (choose the two SSDs and use RAID-1/mirror). You have to unconfigure your fake-raid to be on the safe side beforehand. ZFS works great on SSD and you have much more features including snapshots, silent-data-corruption-detection, etc.

Why do you have a 160 GB harddisk in the server, when you have two bigger SSDs? You can use the slow disk for backups.

I have an idea to install host on 160 hdd , and create raid 1 with SSD disks to storage VM

It's generally a good thing, but to have a single point of failure is just wrong. You're not building a big machine for a company (at least not with that hardware), so you're better off with, e.g. ZFS on two SSDs in mirror mode directly installed from the installer.

Ok, i installed on 2 SSD ZFS in Raid 1. I used writeback cache option for Windows VMs because without this VM and all node crashed when benchmark ssd from VMs ( in write tests )
