how many machines can we run with.

From 1 to approx. 300 depending on what you're doing - just simple RAM calculation. You have to be more specific to get a better answer.

Normally, you don't care about RAM modules so detailed. More important is your storage, because - depending on what you're doing - this is much much more important. E.g. if you only use two 4 TB drives, such a system is totally incapable of running intensive I/O workloads even with mild SQL databases.

Hello François.

The disk subsystem is key, just as LnxBil says. I am new to Proxmox, but not new to virtualisation.

We use it for web hosting, where there is constant disk I/O (sooooo many log files being written all at once, so many emails being read and written, so many website files being read - and lots of database reads and some writes). Out of CPU, RAM and Disk, it is the Disk that is the bottleneck. The CPU doesn't get pushed very hard, even with lots of php scripts running and lots of anti-spam processing etc. Having lots of RAM per VM/Container is always good, of course, especially if you can tune your database settings to use it without going overboard.

Of course your usage may be different.
