I just want to document my observations related to communications errors when clicking on storage items in PVE 7.3-4. Hopefully, this will help developers and others in resolving this issue.
I run PVE in a very simple homelab environment with all storage options either on the host (via VM , containers or host disk/directory) or on a proxmox backup server running on my private network. On multiple occasions, I’ve gotten into a state where clicking on any storage device (Datacenter>pve) results in an error “Communications failure (0)” followed by "Communications timed out (596) with no recovery from this. All other functions of PVE seem to still work. When this happened last time, I decided to try and recover myself as rebooting did not solve the problem.
When I got the error, I checked the status of the storage items via pvesm status and noticed two of the items were in inactive states on a server I had power down. I then disabled those items (unchecked Datacenter>Storage>ID>Edit>Enabled) and PVE immediately returned to normal. I’m including a screen shot of my storage items and the items that had to be disabled are shown there (lts-backup-dir and lts-server).
My observations are that even with these two items enabled, things worked most of the time but then I had the problem described above. Hope this post provides useful information to others as I have seen posts describing the same communications problem without resolution.
