Cluster possible between 1.3 and 1.4?

I finally got The Man to let me buy a second computer so that I have a "fail-over" Proxmox system where I can run our KVM VMs if something needs work on the main computer.

However, our current production server is running ProxMox 1.3, and I just installed V1.4 on the new failover server. Will I be able to cluster these?

no, you need to upgrade the 1.3 first.

Hmm, that poses a problem. Because my 1.3 box is a production server, I want to be sure I've got my VMs saved and able to run on the new box before I go upgrading (and potentially breaking) my production box to 1.4. (Which, actually, I see on the forums some concerns that may make me wait a bit on that.)

However, in reading the clustering how-to, I'm realizing that clustering is not really what I want to do here, because if I walk in some morning and the main server is in flames, I'm obviously not going to be able to use its command line or GUI to move any VMs to the backup node. What I need to be able to do is use my failover computer to load up a VM that I've saved from the main server earlier. I assume that's something I do with vzdump and/or other commands, so I'll go looking for that procedure.

That brings up the question: is a KVM saved from a 1.3 box able to load up and run on a 1.4 box?

yes, just restore a backup file from 1.3 to the new 1.4 to see if everything works.
