Client OS version requirements

Hello,

I was considering PBS to backup some bare metal and VM servers, then I came to client documentation and I see only a Debian 10 version and a quote

"It may work with older, and should work with more recent released versions."

I tested it on Debian 8 and Debian 9 and dependencies fail for both.

FAQ says:

Which platforms are supported as a backup source (client)?¶​

The client tool works on most modern Linux systems, meaning you are not limited to Debian-based backups.

But docs does not mention how to install client on other Linux OS.

Is there any option to backup older Debian servers?

Both of those are generally EOL. Debian 9 has still extended, security-only, LTS support for roughly a bit over a year.

The software and build process on those older versions would require quite a bit of work, and we do not plan to put in that work and add support for general EOL versions now, when Debian 11 is already on the door steps.

You could build the client for those yourself, though.
But as you need to upgrade sooner or later anyway, at least if you want to run a secure and maintained setup, and the Debian Upgrade process is relatively smooth, I'd think that upgrading is the better way to address this.

If upgrading, why ever, is really not possible for you, then a workaround could be running the client in a chroot/containerized environment.
