if I enable Avast Virus Scanner, are then both scanners used?

If you install and use avast only avast is used.

sorry - my mistake (a colleague just reminded me - and the code verifies this) - if avast is installed then mails are first scanned by avast - if it finds something this info is used - if not the mail is passed to clamav as well.
