chunk store error

I am trying to mount a previously used datastore in PBS, but am getting this error message:

unable to create chunk store 'qnap' subdir "/mnt/qnap/.chunks" - EEXIST: File exists

It does exist. it is from my old pbs instance. Is it safe to remove this, or how should I proceed forward?
