Changing the gateway address on a clustered node

Can anyone tell me please, I have a node in a cluster that I need to change just the gateway address of, the IP address and host name will stay the same. The documentation suggests "changing the host name and IP is not possible in a cluster", but I only want to change the gateway address. Couple of questions..

  1. Is this possible without breaking any nodes / clusters
  2. Is this service affecting (I can reach to the nodes via local link). I'm assume this is because allthough I'm applying via the GUI this would run ifupdown2 which briefly kills all NICs, correct?
Thanks in advance.

hi,

Is this possible without breaking any nodes / clusters
yes definitely. but it depends 100% on your network configuration. maybe if you provide more information you can get a definitive answer

if the cluster nodes can still reach each other it should be fine. ifupdown2 resetting the nics will only cause issues if something is misconfigured.

Thanks for your reply oguz

Currently the cluster has 2 live nodes running PVE 6.x, they are both on the same /27 subnet. For example
  • Node 1 - PROx01.domain.local - 10.0.0.7 /27 (was the original node and has a gateway address of 10.0.0.30)
  • Node 2 - PROX02.domain.local - 10.0.0.1 /27 (newer node has a gateway address of 10.0.0.3)
The gateway address of Node 1 does no have internet so this now needs to be changed to 10.0.0.3, it's that simple. My plan was just to change the gateway address on the GUI and hit apply, unless you think there is a saffer way?

Thanks

Changing it on the GUI should be perfectly fine, since it's only writing / changing config in the /etc/network/interfaces file.
You should be good to go to do it, if nothing else in your infrastructure is standing in your way (Like firewalls).
But since you have already one node connected to the gateway it's unlikely.

In short: Changing the gateway with the GUI is perfectly fine.
