Change existing VM From i440fx to Q35

I have one Proxmox Cluster and i create VMs with Machine type i440fx. Can i change the Machine type for EXISTING VMs to Q35 or i need to create new VMs ?

Of course you can change the Machine Type of an existing VM.

However you should note the following:
  • The change will only be picked up after Shutting down & restarting the VM.
  • Changing the machine type is similar to a MB change; so the VM may not run correctly after the change.
  • Always have a backup of the VM - so you can always start again.

If the guest is Linux you probably can just change it.
Not always (as you also imply). I just tested it on a trivial Debian Server VM - and although it booted correctly after changing to q35 from i440fx, it lost it's NW connectivity + GA. So anything is possible!

I’ll leave it for now. I was thinking of buying an internet card and a storage card.
