So i am looking to passthru an internal CD-rom drive from the HS to some of my VM (linux mint to start with)

So when on the HS the drive shows up as sr0 so the host machine sees the drive. No matter what i do though i can't seem to get access to in the the VM environment.

When ever i try to add the virtual cd drive and boot the vm up it gives me an error code of:

kvm: -drive file=/dev/cdrom,if=none,id=drive-sata0,media=cdrom,aio=io_uring: Could not read image for determining its format: Input/output error
TASK ERROR: start failed: QEMU exited with code 1

No matter what option i select within the VM (minus use no media) i just can't get this cdrom drive to work..

What am i doing wrong?

So from that it is basically saying an audio CD will not work....that was from 2 years ago. Is this still the state of proxmox? i would think the hypervisor would be able to do this....but no luck

Indeed, and it has not changed. Proxmox VE is a clustered enterprise hypervisor and not designed for audio CDs. There are lots of work-arounds as you already saw,
