Can't start Windows 11 VM

Hello,
ona proxmox pve-manager/7.4-3/9002ab8a (running kernel: 5.15.102-1-pve),
i cant start Windows 11 VM:

swtpm_setup: Not overwriting existing state file.
kvm: -device ide-cd,bus=ide.0,unit=1,drive=drive-ide1,id=ide1,bootindex=103: Can't create IDE unit 1, bus supports only 1 units
stopping swtpm instance (pid 557321) due to QEMU startup error
TASK ERROR: start failed: QEMU exited with code 1

With machine type q35 you can only have one IDE device per channel, so two IDE devices max in total. Connect the harddisk of the VM as "scsi" and use the virtio drivers ISO to install the virtio scsi driver during Windows install.

Either do what @VictorSTS said, or if you insist on using IDE - dont connect virtio ISO, instead - swap the install and driver ISO in the middle of installation when it actually asks you for drivers, then swap it back.

Hi,
this was a bug and has been fixed in qemu-server >= 8.0.7 with https://git.proxmox.com/?p=qemu-server.git;a=commit;h=b155086bd8c408ca03673e9ae9339c32ef1f99fc
Still, like @VictorSTS recommendec, VirtIO SCSI or block devices are recommended for performance reasons and are better maintained in QEMU.

@fiona , just to be sure, what is specifically patched? With this patch Q35 will support more than 2 IDE devices or it will not allow to add more than 2 IDE devices to a Q35 VM?

It allows adding up to 4 IDE devices, because now, each device is added as unit=0 on a dedicated bus. Before, ide1 and ide3 would tried to be added as unit=1 of the bus, which works for i440fx, but q35 doesn't support.

Thanks! That issue was lying around since "ever" now but didn't bother me much a I seldom use more than 1 IDE device.
