Cannot Restore VM Backups: Checksum Errors And Corruption

We have a virtual machine running Issabel 5, which is currently operational. Now, when we back up the virtual machine using any of the modes and try to restore that backup on another system with different hardware, we encounter errors indicating file corruption and checksum failures.
Both systems are running version 8.4.1 and are fully up to date.
We also have a secondary hard drive directly attached to this machine, with the backup parameter set to backup=0

  1. Can you restore the backup (to a new VM, don't overwrite the existing one!) on the originating system? If not, then the backup is corrupt, possibly because of drive or memory corruption (or other hardware issues on the originating system).
  2. Did you backup to a file (or to some backup software system like PBS) and is the copy of the file on the target system identical to the file on the originating system (and how did you transfer it)? If not, then the copy is corrupt, possibly because of drive or memory corruption (or other hardware issues) on one of the systems or the medium used to transfer, or corruption during the transfer or copy action itself
  3. If the file is correct but you get errors restoring then the target system probably has drive or memory corruption or other hardware issues.
Additionally, check your system and task logs for more concrete error messages that might give a clue. There is not enough information in your post to give any specific help.

Backup restoration fails across all systems, despite successful error-free backup creation. Only 10% of generated backups are functional.
