I have a proxmox ve cluster, configured with ceph.
Could i install this as a vm on another cluster and have it use the ceph cluster on the first cluster i mentioned ?
Im thinking that would mean being able to add a ceph datastore on the backup server.

Hi,

yes, you can do that. But we do not recommend keeping the live VM/CT data and the backups on the same storage, as that could mean that you have nothing left if, why ever, the ceph storage breaks (even if just temporary).

We know of bigger setups which have their own, physically and logically separate, ceph cluster just used as backup archive storage, that is OK - as the live disks are completely decoupled from the backup.

If you really want to use that ceph storage for both, I'd highly recommend adding a second PBS off-site and setup sync jobs.

I would use two proxmox clusters, each using ceph. Lets say: PVE_STORAGE and PVE_VMS.

I would create a container on PVE_STORAGE with Proxmox Backup Server.
Ideally i would be able to mounth the cephfs of PVE_STORAGE as a datastore in the Proxmox Backup Server container.

I would then add Proxmox Backup Server as a storage on PVE_VMS.

Would this be possible ?
