Can I backup to a network store/share

Good job with the server based on my tests works great.

I already have a backup solution with TB of storage. It is kind of hard to justify the additional investment in the storage itself for additional backup server. I have about 160 VM and growing so the incremental backup is what I need, the total backup time from ceph storage is about ~20 hours. Is it feasible and possible to use a datastore from a network location (10Gbps) ? mounted on the backup server ? Would it be fast enough and/or supported ?

Thank you

i mean you could (and nothing in the stack is stopping you) and afaik there are users who do this, but you'll only be happy if your storage/network is fast enough
you'd simply have to mount your network storage and point pbs to it to create a new datastore, i'd just be careful with mounting startup ordering

Is 10Gbps fast enough for this ? You referenced storage also , I am testing the PBS on a VM running on Proxmox and the incremental backup makes a difference already, using regular hard drives for this. I think my limitation/bottleneck is Ceph storage on which my VPN run and not necessary the storage as hard drive on PBS. I've already seen huge improvement with incremental backup.

i meant in comparison to local storage. so if your remote storage is faster or as fast as local storage, it should be fine

I will give it a try. Otherwise what do you recommend for 160+ VMs in terms of local drives , not capacity but performance wise ? SAS vs. SATA , SSD vs. HDD spinners ? I think in our case the bottleneck is Ceph storage so saving in backup speed just comes from incremental backups and not necessary from how fast the drive is written to . I understand that a fast metadata disk would be useful in that case - what should be the size of the metadata drive ?

We have about 5.7TB of VM backups keeping 4 last backups (no increments).

Thank you
