Hi, i would be grateful for some tips.
I want to build up a media server, what is the best setup?
I'm using already Proxmox with 25 vms/container.
Wanting to add 160TB HDD to media server and running plex on it. Should i create a raidz1/2 pool on Proxmox and add the datasets as virtual disk to a vm?
Or is it better to create TrueNAS as a VM and passthrough all disk, to create the raid in truenas?
Maybe there are better options?

edit: i use a hba already, but cant passthrough it because there are more disks (Supermicro chassis with backplane and 24 hotswaps.

Is there a reason wh TrueNAS and not just everything in a VM on proxmox?
You would need to be fit with ZFS as PVE doesn't offer any GUI to manage your SMB/NFS shares, creating users/groups/ACLs, doing automated snapshots, replication of data to another pool for backup reasons, replace failed disks, encryption, manage datasets and its options, ... so all that would have to be done by you manually via CLI. Makes life a lot simpler and easier by using an appliance that manages all this for you with a GUI.
Benefit of PVE would be faster bugfixes, that you don'T need to rely on PCI passthrough that might cause problems after kernel upgrades and the ability to migrate the whole VM with all its data between nodes...but I guess you don't plan to add another node that got enough empty space to fit a 160TB virtual disk to be actually able to migrate it...

So in the end that means the only advantage for truenas is that it have a gui for all?
I’m asking because Proxmox is a hypervisor and truenas is a ‚nas‘.

Yes, thats the main advantage. Less time wasted administrating it and less chanced for human error.

Im ok with using the cli. So I will stay with Proxmox and install everything what I need in a vm without truenas.
