Just needing some general guidance, I have a pve host running 7.3.6 and thinking of running pfsense as a firewall/router. Could this be done without pfsense and just with my current modem-router combo or is pfsense or opnsense a better way? I plan on running Nextcloud/Collabora, Jellyfin & Grocy in LXC containers so I guess I'm looking for an idea of best practice/way of settng something like this up. The combo modem I have is the DPC3941T.

To a large degree, something like that comes down to personal preference!

If you want to run services that should be exposed to the internet, the most important thing is if you can configure port forwards on your modem/router that you got from your ISP.

If you want to run your own router (as a VM or on its own physical box), the ideal thing would be if the modem/router can be switched into bridge mode or similar. That really depends a lot on your ISP and how they configure their modems.

Still pondering my options on this, thanks for your response your suggestions definitely help provide some clarity.
