Hello everyone!

I'm using a Dell R510 with 6tb Raid 5 and a spare SAS 15k hd under Perc H700 raid controller.
I was planning to run proxmox with vms for the following services:
1) Plex on ubuntuserver + other minor services
2) Home Assistant
3) some fun with other OS
I want also use the 6tb raid for media/data files to share to Plex VM and over the network (samba is enought for now).

So I was using the 500gb 15k sas drive for proxmox and vms, and mounting the 6tb raid as a folder under ubuntuserver vm, to access the files from plex and to share them using samba.
I did serveral try (I am completely noob by the way) and I was pretty happy with the result.
So I deleted ubuntuserver VM to redo a new, fresh installation. That formatted also the raid loosing all data (why??).
I was wandering if I'm doing something wrong and there's a better solution for what I want archive.
I don't see the point to get rid of the Perc card just to use ZFS, it seems a waste of money but maybe I'm wrong. And stuff like FreeNAS demands too much RAM.

Any suggestion?

How do you store your media? If you delete a VM it will destroy all virtual disks used by that VM. So if you use virtual disks to store your media your media will be destroyed too.

How did you pass the disk through to the VM?
Do you by any chance have the config still available?

Then your data should still be there but doing a restore you will loose your passthrough so you need to add the passthrough again.
I personally always add the used command to passthrough my disk to the notes page of the VM. So after a restore I just need to open the nodes section and copy+paste the command to the hosts console to add passthrough again. And best you define the disk using "/dev/disk/by-id/yourDisk" instead of "/dev/sdX" so you don't passthrough the wrong disk by accident.

nope, they just disappear. Also as I can see in proxmox storage summary the raid is empty now.
