Backup Size to hight

Hi all, i have 3 hdds in my VM. 1x 100G qcow2, 1x 1T vmdk and 1x 250G qcow2. Used are only 190 GB total. But in backup i have 490 Gib and after archived 460 GB? Why this? How can i fix/solve it? Any ideas?

There are probably a lot of deleted data on those virtual disks. Did you enable discard and/or SSD emulation that would allow the operating system inside the VM to signal that certain virtual disk blocks are no longer used? Can you run some kind of trim operation inside the VM?

inside of vm:
fstrim -v /
fstrim: /: the discard operation is not supported

Can you try using VirtIO or VirtIO SCSI instead of IDE or SATA and make sure you use a Storage that supports thin provisioning and/or discard . Not all emulated controllers and/or storages support discard.

I don't know if qcow2 or vmdk support discard. Maybe this Wiki page can help you shrink the qcow2 files? Maybe you can convert the vmdk file to qcow2?

Indeed, for qcow2 and vmdk it does not work automatically.

ok, files goes also daily bigger? do a solution exist here? i can not shrink all vms manually...? a command to shrink automatical in cronjob or other ideas?

Use a Storage type that does support discard like LVM (thin) or ZFS instead of a directory (with qcow2 files).
