Hello,
I'm sorry this is certainly a question allready answered, but I can't find it anywhere.
I've got a backup job running every 4h15 minutes on my server. I'd like to receive mails only in case of errors, but I receive mails on each backup execution. Is there a way to limit the mails to errors? On the settings of the backup task, I can't select to send on errors only :

Thanks for your help!
You currently have Send email: Always, you can switch that to On failure only. Optionally you can select the Notification mode: Notification system and use matching rules to filter what to send when, see https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.html#chapter_notifications

The issue is that I can't change to "On failure only". As you can see in my screenshot it is greyed out and I can't edit it.
Thanks
You will have to provide the email address first, then you can change the field.

it's not possible with "Notification system" i'm using Notification system, in this case can not see this option. I want to receive email only if backup failed. How can i do this with Notification system option? Also it's same for PBS

I face the same issue - when the "Notification system" is chosen, the "On failure only" option is disabled

The option won't show in the backup setting.

Instead, you will need to set your default notifications to only send emails when errors are triggered:

Go to notifications, edit your default notification matcher, go to match rules tab, click add rule and do:

1. Node type: Match Severity
2. Unselect "Info" severity (or pick only Error severity, if that's your preference)
3. Press OK

Now you'll only receive an email if there's an error somewhere (I prefer getting an email even if it's only a warning).

This works for me because I only want to get any system notifications (including backups) if there's a warning or error. If you have more complicated setup and want to get "info" emails for other things, it seems like you could do this with the notification matcher system but I haven't tested it out.

This worked for me. You have to set the appropriate settings under Datacenter >> Notifications. Thank you.

Thanks for this - your solution came near the top searching for "email notifications".

I wanted to add to the feedback that this is a bit confusing:

1. It totally surprised me my email provider (Fastmail) even allows this through! SMTP comes up as a Fastmail SMTP, and I had no idea this was possible without credentials. I've emailed Fastmail about that!
2. The integration with the backup job and the obvious option below being greyed out is confusing. The linked help on that dialogue doesn't mention any of this either.
3. The official response on here is not the correct one, it relied on @mrrost - suggesting it's confusing even for Proxmox themselves.

Mail providers have to accept plain SMTP on port 25. That's how mail gets transferred between providers. Most, however, only allow such mail to be delivered locally, not forwarded, in order to prevent abuse by spammers. Mail that must be forwarded needs to be submitted on port 465 or 587 with authentication.
