Hi,

As per title: Is it possible to have PVE backup a hard disk, if the (SATA/SAS) controller is passed through to a VM?

I know that it is possible to have PVE backup a disk that has been passed through to a VM, but what if the entire controller is passed through, i.e. PVE doesn't actually see the disk anymore. My guess is that this doesn't work, but wanted to check before I discount that as a possibility.

If it does not work, my next guess would be that it can be done using the PBS client inside the VM, right?

Thanks!

Indeed not, because the Proxmox host no longer knows about the controller, and therefore any drives connected to it.

Yes, the Proxmox Backup Client can be used to make a backup of filesystems on the disks from inside the VM.
