So i can pass through each item if i add it in proxmox, xbox contoller, g27 wheel, webcam. But i can't pass the whole usb device through. seems rather weird. I can see it in Dmesg (there are no warnings or errors given) on proxmox, but it doesn't show as an item i can pass through, but does show the devices plugged into it on the remote end.

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. Hub

if i add it to the config file either with the device ID or the Port number it still doesn't pass through
usb0: host=1-4
or
usb0: host=046d:c534

Any one had any luck passing something like this through before ?

Linux pve 6.8.12-8-pve #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC PMX 6.8.12-8 (2025-01-24T12:32Z) x86_64

Thread 'Passthrough of USB Hub that supports Per Port Power Switching'

I have multiple test fixtures
Each fixture consists of 2 USB devices plugged into a USB hub that supports Per Port Power switching (PPPS).
These USB devices often lock up and require VBUS power to be toggled in order to reset them. Thus the need for Per Port Power switching.
Each fixture is assigned to a proxmox hosted VM and I currently have 3 fixtures (3 hubs) attached to the machine running Proxmox.

My physical machine only has one PCI based USB 3.0 hub.
I need to passthrough each of the individual hubs to their own VM
Or I suppose a less likely solution would be to somehow pass...

ok, we cannot take a usb hub and expose it to a vm, and then plug in usb devices without doing things in the virtualization host.

My question is where this limitation comes from.
Is it a hardware issue? is it qemu?

Any links or pointers would be appreciated.

Its a hub, you can't passthrough a hub, so just pass through the ports on that hub and when you plug stuff in it will get passed through.
as my hub has 3 ports i have this in my config, not tested yet but the theory is sound....
usb0: host=1-4.1
usb1: host=1-4.2
usb2: host=1-4.3
