I was dumb and not thinking about having to do apt dist-upgrade and just ran an apt upgrade. Thankfully this is the only issue I've seen so far but it looks like two of my nics got renamed. Is this just what happens when you are up late and forget that you shouldn't run apt upgrade or do I need to set vdev rules to prevent this from happening in the future?

ens2f0 became ens1f0
ens2f1 became ens1f1
ens1f0 became ens2f0
ens1f1 became ens2f1

Hi!

Renames like that can happen due to kernel or driver updates or even if the systemd version changes. Could be that your upgrade included a new kernel? FWIW, PVE 9 includes a network pinning tool that tackles exactly this issue. See here for more info about it. In any case, I don't think this is related to running apt upgrade instead of apt dist-upgrade. The main difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade is that dist-upgrade will remove packages to satisfy dependencies. See the Debian Wiki for additional info.

from which version to which version did you upgrade? what network hardware are you using?

Sorry I didnt see the notification of the response. I upgraded from 8.4.5 to 8.4.6 its a Dell PowerEdge R740.
