apt or pve for automatic (unatended) upgrades?

Hi,

i now its an evergreen but sadly proxmox still has no gui option i could find for automatically checking and if available installing upgrades.
since i am currently in the process of setting up a new system i wonder if a cronjob is recommended wwith pveupdate and pveupgrade?
i a few years back i used apt update and upgrade but i also remember that someone told me that apt is not the recommended way for proxmox anymore.

so tl;dr:
what is the recommended way to get automatic upgrades on a proxmox install in 2026?

we are using unattended upgrades with enterprise repositories for years without problems.

with community repos we are doing manual upgrades, but never had problems either to be fair.

proxmox used apt update / apt dist-upgrade behind pveupdate/pveupgrade, so no problem.

Just be carefull to use "apt dist-upgrade" and not "apt upgrade" !
