Anybody running PBS on UGreen units?

I ran across the UGreen line of NAS units the other day while looking for a possible option to replace my existing PBS server.

I'm usually a Synology guy but found it interesting that with the UGreen models you can load (supported yes) another O/S on their machines to replace their current O/S. That includes unraid, trunas and even Proxmox. With the ability to have 2 m.2 drives for the O/S, up to 128G ram and 4-8 drives it struck my curiosity about having or using this as a Proxmox Backup Server. Reviewing the PBS documentation it states a modern CPU, 4Gb ram for the O/S and (at least) 1Gb per data storage size their boxes seem to check all the requirements. To achieve optimal performance then using SSD drives instead of spinning drives would be the best and i'm unsure if that is an option unless you could replace/somehow-mount SSD's into their removable drive chassis.

Curious if anyone is using this as a solution and if so, what's been your experience with them.

That's where I'd gotten the idea, but since have seen several other video's about 'hacking' the bios on similar devices. The hardware meets the hardware requirements but was wondering if anyone had done this and could share their results. I've since found out that the 5.25" chassis doesn't have the ability to use SSD drives tho. Not sure it'll stop me but am still curious with low cost, older hardware still being so high.

Hmm. I don't have one, but from my experience, a bare metal install of PBS is straightforward and uncomplicated. For my homeprod setup I have been running PBS on a Lenovo M910Q with a consumer grade Crucial 2TB SSD for the better part of three years with no issues.

So I would like to think that as long as uGreen is not using proprietary hardware/drivers that you should be A-OK.
 
I have installed PVE 8 and upgraded to PVE 9 on my Ugreen DXP4800 Plus. When it doesn't randomly hang, it works nicely. The hangs are intermittent and not logged. Also this occurred on 8 as well which prompted me to upgrade to 9. I am still trying to iron out what is going on.

I haven't purchased the unit yet but was opening up a discussion to see if anyone else had started using these units. My 'use' would be as a PBS box and not PVE. I know you're trying to determine the issue but can you let me know if you are using the 'free' or paid version and if Debian is the newer code, or version 12?

Running TN25 for some month now. Had one hang during reboot on OS-Update. Virtualization in TN sucks badly :p so I'm on the verge of switching to pve9. Checking out currently on a QNAP TS473a lacking 10 Gbit due to heat problems. DXP4800P is also burning hot but seems to work at least.

I'm currently running Proxmox 9.0.5 which is the newer debian version 13 (trixie) without a subscription (free). Today I updated the intel-microcode and eliminated a unused zfs pool. Fingers are crossed and only time will tell if it hangs again.
