I'd also consider monitoring your disk weekly/daily(?) usage (total read/write, iops etc both vm and host based). Perhapse this might giva a clue how badly (if at all) your disk is being stressed out. Obviously your w10 autonomous behavior (scheduled updates etc) might make the results a bit "blury" but still...
PS. Side note - ifyour lab case size is not an issue and motherboard supportts it - think of buying some cheap'o 2nd hand sas/sata raid controller for some storage trials
For example: D2516-C11 (thats probably Fujitsu codename - but it's an LSI card anyway). Has its own cache, supports BBU, and 2TB+ disks. For ZFS go for HBA or reflash controller to IT mode (if possible).
