Hello,

I just updated my proxmox farm from 2.6.32-1 to 2.6.32-2 kernel (with all package available in deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian lenny pve).
All was okay except my cpu load average is now between 2 and 3, instead of 0
The VM image have not changed, so it's not their fault.

Please see attached files for htop and cacti information.
If you have any ideas to come back to a small load, tell me what to test ;)

Rck

pveversion -v
Code:
pdm2:~# pveversion -v

Okay, after testing, I confirm that there is a bug in the pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve. (at least on my hardware - Dell Optiplex 380 SF - Core2Duo 8400 - 4GB)
Rolling back to pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve or pve-kernel-2.6.18-2-pve fix the KVM load average problem.

If you had installed the 2.6.32-1 before, the install packages should still be on your server.
So, just execute the following commands:
cd /var/cache/apt/archives
dpkg -i proxmox-ve-2.6.32_1.5-4_all.deb
then vim /boot/grub/menu.lst
and remove the 2.6.32-2 bloc at the bottom
title Proxmox Virtual Environment, kernel 2.6.32-2-pve
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-2-pve root=/dev/mapper/pve-root ro
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.32-2-pve
be sure to keep the kernel 2.6.32-1-pve bloc, or your server will not reboot :)

Do i take it then that 2.6.32-2 is still problematic ? I dont have 2.6.32-1 to go to.

Hi,

Tests on 2 serveur. Same CPU modele (4 x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8400 @ 2.66GHz)

I just upgraded my Proxmox VE server to kernel 2.6.32-3 (pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve). Regarding the load, it looks better than kernel 2.6.32-2, but still not as kernel 2.6.32-1.

pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 0.00
pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve: 0.50
pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve: 0.10

What kernel version do you use exactly?

Dietmar,

I am using kernel 2.6.32-3-pve 64 bits (x86_64).

To be honnest, I do not see any problem with 2.6.32-2-pve or 2.6.32-3-pve! It is just than the load average "seems" higher.

I do not think there is a problem to use kernel 2.6.32-3-pve.

Dietmar,

My mistake, the load is as follow:

pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 0.00
pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve: 0.50
pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve: 0.10

With pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve, it is almost again the same as pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve.

It's a good news to see the Load Average decrease with pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve, because even if it's a artificial mesurement, the jump was so huge between 32-1 and 32-2 that it was scary :p

Now I have upgraded my second Proxmox VE server to kernel 2.6.32-3 (pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve). Regarding the load, it looks like kernel 2.6.32-1:

pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 0.00
pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve: 0.50
pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve: 0.00

Kernel: pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve
CPU: Intel Core i7-860 @ 2.80 GHz -- 4 cores / 8 threads
Architecture: x86_64

My first server:

Kernel: pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz -- 4 cores
Architecture: x86_64

Now I have upgraded my second Proxmox VE server to kernel 2.6.32-3 (pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve). Regarding the load, it looks like kernel 2.6.32-1:

pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 0.00
pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve: 0.50
pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve: 0.00

Kernel: pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve
CPU: Intel Core i7-860 @ 2.80 GHz -- 4 cores / 8 threads
Architecture: x86_64

My first server:

Kernel: pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz -- 4 cores
Architecture: x86_64
Are those OVH servers? (You have CPUs from their offer ;) )

Hi,
Does 2.6.32-3 come from pve update or pve-test update ?

Regards,

Tes

PS : Just see the new version of PVE ^^
Download and test it today

Both repositories contain the same version currently. Why don't you simply use the full version numbers when you talk aboout kernel versions? Current package version is "2.6.32-12"

(file name: pve-kernel-2.6.32-3-pve_2.6.32-12_amd64.deb)
