Advice on disk config

Hello everyone,

I recently got a new bare metal server that I am going to install ProxMox VE 8 on.

The new configuration will be:
1x AMD EPYC 7282 Rome 16 cores
256GB ECC RAM
HPE smart array e208i-a sr gen10
8x Samsung 2TB SSD 870

Do note that the server from my hoster is a fixed configuration server.
Its an server that another customer cancelled and my hoster just reposted with a big discount so some configuration choices may be not ideal (and the SSDs in particular) but I have no input into it. (And when the SSDs will wearout in 1 to 2 years I am going to ask for at least some sort of enterprise SSD disks. But that is up to them as hardware replacements are part of my contract so they have to replace them with there own money.)

So that leaves me wondering if it would be better to use hardware RAID or ZFS in my case.

My planning is:
2x 2TB (RAID 1) SSD for Proxmox VE itself and my ISOs/template files.
2x 2TB (RAID 1) SSD for VM files and VM data.
4x 2TB (RAID 10) SSD for backups.

Now I have 3 options:
1. Use the hardware RAID controller and configure the RAIDs via the controller and let the controller do all the RAID stuff.
2. Use HBA pass-through and do the RAID stuff via ZFS.
3. Do a combination of option 1 and 2.

I am tempted to go with option 2 as it offers more flexibility but I would like to get some input on it.

Thanks in advance.
