Additional Disk is showing 100% full suddenly

Hello everyone,

I would like to start by apologising if this is a very dumb question as I am a Proxmox and Linux noob, but I added the brand-new disk to use for storage in OMV VM. But the very next day, OMV VM, showed IO error and after investigating, I found out that the storage was 100% full. I have not used this new disk whatsoever. The only thing I did between adding this disk and seeing the IO error, was backed up the same OMV VM onto the same storage from Proxmox GUI.

If you added the disk as PVE storage and then allocated 100% of the disk to virtual disk assigned to your VM (and did not enable discard when creating the virtual disk), then I believe PVE will report the storage as 100% full because 100% is allocated to a virtual disk. That said, this is not necessarily a problem, and it wouldn't explain the IO error you mentioned, so I don't really know what's going on there.

If you want to keep the disk as PVE storage, but don't want to see it 100% full, then you could enable discard on the virtual disk. Alternatively, if the disk will be dedicated to OMV, then it might be better to simply pass the whole drive through to the VM. See here.

So, there has been a development since my last post. I deleted the VM backup and then I was able to force stop the VM (not sure if I tried force stopping before but I tried force rebooting, shutting down etc), and then started and working fine since.

Coming back to the disk, I have assigned another disk exactly the same way and that displays the storage that makes sense to me, but I was stumped to find this was different.

But this has eased up my mind and won't sweat. Thank you again.
