I hope you don't mind a short test for comparison:
HP DL-160, 2x Xeon quadcore E5405 @ 2.00GHz with 12GB RAM
3ware 9690SA with BBU
4x WD 500 GB (WD5002ABYS) in Raid 5
(currently running 6 active (K)VM's, none of them very heavy)

pveversion -v:
pve-manager: 1.7-10 (pve-manager/1.7/5323)
running kernel: 2.6.35-1-pve

Timing cached reads: 8494 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4251.83 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 856 MB in 3.00 seconds = 285.18 MB/sec

I've just installed a new 6405 controller with 6gbs disks:

CPU BOGOMIPS: 19998.24
REGEX/SECOND: 831972
HD SIZE: 9.99 GB (/dev/mapper/pve01-root)
BUFFERED READS: 142.45 MB/sec
AVERAGE SEEK TIME: 10.52 ms
FSYNCS/SECOND: 4711.97
DNS EXT: 164.75 ms

pretty cool for a 300 EUR device.

this is very small
6805 + 8 sas2 Seagate on raid 0

BUFFERED READS: 415 - 450 MB/sec

For me FSYNCS/SECOND has shown to be most important ... and I've 4 Seagate disks in one RAID 5

4 x 12 core AMD 6174
32 x 8Gb ddr3 ecc
RAID - Adaptec 6805
HDD raid - 8 x 1Tb Seagate SAS2 - stripe 512k
HDD sata - 320Gb WD (system)
