8-10 seconds to open Windows explorer

1. My problem is, on my Windows 10 VM running on ZFS, after pressing Win+E, nothing happens until about 8 seconds, and it takes about 2 seconds for the file explorer to show and paint properly
2. I just moved from a 64GB RAM 5800X to a 128GB E5 2680 v4, my CPU load is (~10%), it has been given 12 cores on both machines
3. On the 5800X, it did nothing for about 3 seconds also also took about 2 seconds to paint
4. It is not a graphics card problem, I can watch videos on it just fine
5. I also don't think it is a windows 10 problem since I can do browsing just and most things just fine, all except for the slowness
6. On the 5800X, I blamed on the numerous SMB shares that I mapped as drives
7. On the 2680, I decided to unmap all of them except 1
8. Any idea how I can figure out what is causing this slowness?

Running ZFS with consumer SSDs or SMR HDDs?
Whats the peak IO delay on the PVE host?
Any passthroughed HDDs that might need to spin up first?

ZFS is a mirror running on the Samsung 970 Evo plus and 980 pro, no mechanical disks at all.

just reinstalled Windows 10 and mapped some drives, it was buttery smooth. It would be odd that the current Windows 10 is bad. I guess it's reconfiguring my setup on a fresh Windows again. Thanks.

An E5 2680 v4 (Q1'16) is much slower than a 5800X (per thread/instructions) and it's clock speed is also lower. I believe that Windows I/O in virtual machines is know for it's slowness. Starting the explorer is probably a single threaded workload, and therefore a lot slower. I'm not sure this is your problem but I do think it's something to consider.

@leesteken

Sure, my conclusion is that the earlier W10 went bad, malware/etc, but I'm surprised because I was relatively strict about how it was used.

For a quantitative comparison, file explorer opens immediately when I press Win+E. The only change here is the Windows OS.
