Hello, I was watching a guy on youtube a while back I could never figure out how he has an 4 core I'm not sure if its 4 threads or 8 threads system with proxmox on it having multiple VM. the VM's he has was Pihole, minecraft server, a SMB file server and two others all Running at the same time. And every sense that video I always wonder how is that possible to run that many VM's without having more cores and more threads.

My question to the community is how is that possible to run that many VM's only on a few cores?

You are allowed to overbook virtual cores. Most of the time your VMs don't use 100% of their availiable cores, and the scheduler on the Proxmox host can then fit the actual required work into the availiable physical cores.

How many cores you can overbook depends on your workload, but as a rule of thumb you can assign 2-3 times the availiable threads in vCPU cores. The only thing you should not do is to give one single VM more vCPUs than your host system has total threads.

Did you try it? Yes you can over-commit on CPUs. That's how enterprises consolidate many VMs on few servers (since most VMs are not doing anything most of the time). Of course when every VM is very busy, they will all be slower.

No, I haven't tried anything like that yet. Not even sure what it was into I saw it and made me really think. I am most definitely interested and maybe in a few I can try this out. Thank you.

Thank you very much for the Help and information to understand how this works. I never known you can do something like this. It's pretty cool. I am most definitely interested in trying this sometime in the future.
