I have this same question. I have a VM stored on an LVM, but I need to create a snapshot of the VM. Is it possible for me to convert the LVM to LVM thin? Or do I have to create a new LVM thin on another disk, then relocate the VM's Hard Drive?

I have gotten this error as well and adding sudo to the command line didn't work. Tried running the command as root...same result.

Found the solution: in the PVE GUI, I went to Datacenter>Storage and found the directories there, selected them, and clicked "Remove" at the top. They are now no longer listed in the Server View pane.
