In Linux (regardless Proxmox, OMV, debian..etc.) it is good enough to just unmount the drive then unplug. In your case you should unmount it from OMV GUI.
To spin down the device before unplugging, you should do the following:
Unmount its filesystem from OMV GUI
Detach the device...

Lately I discovered that mdadm devices (md0, md1..etc.) doesn't show up in nmon disk I/O list.
In other debian based servers (not PVE) mdadm devices show up as usual.

I would like to report similar problem with pfSense VM with same behavior when using pve-kernel-5.0.21-4-pve.
The VM stalls at kernel panic.
I reverted back to the previous kernel and the VM worked fine.
