Thank you, it was strange behaviour indeed - I ended up reinstalling PVE on a different drive and then using PVE to wipe the previous drive - which seems to be behaving following that.

Setting up a new machine with PVE 8 (previously and currently used pve 6.4 - 7)
post install, try my login with root at the console ( not webui).
The cursor moves to the next line, blinks for about 5s, then the whole screen resets to the standard login screen:

@BrianVB I realise this is some months later, but I think the answer here is to realise that ZeroTier is like a whole network of its own, overlaid above the VE LAN and interacting only with your VM, and only inside the VM. So imagine it only touches the VM, and never any of your VE host hardware...

Your tips helped me indeed work out that my system is grub. As an explainer, I was thrown by the output from the pve-efiboot-tool command being more than just "error", instead outputting several obtuse lines and subtly saying nothing meaningful...
