I think I just got confused reading the output of aptitude search. I see things like ' pve-kernel-2.6.32-4-pve', which is what I have installed, but there are other not-installed packages like ' linux-image-2.6-amd64'. I thought maybe those were non-pve kernels, I guess not.

Okay. On the other hand, the repository has kernel images that are not pve. Those have no guarantees then? I suppose if not, I will just stay on the 32 kernel...

As some may remember I had a problem trying to get asterisk dahdi driver working under the host node (the driver would panic.) Sangoma told me it was likely due to the openvz patched kernel. For various other reasons, I am only running KVM now anyway, so which is the best kernel for that...

vmdk? is this an imported vmware disk? ide for the HD sounds fine.

Have you tried resetting the VM? I've had that happen with windows xp once or twice, and after a reset it came back fine.

What is your WISP using for a gateway? If that is a decent power box, it is fairly common to have it run the dns and dhcp too...

You type this in a root shell on the proxmox. That said, if the WISP has any significant number of customers, you should not be running essential services like this on your hypervisor box.

Might it be easier at this point to just reinstall with 1.7 and then restore your VMs?
