Setting up a cluster with only 2 hosts

if you only have 2 nodes, you need to use CLI to move vms. (it's not possible with gui). when a node crash: 1) verify that the node is really crashed and vms are not running anymore 2) on the other node : #pvecm expected 1 (to be able to write in /etc/pve ) 3) on the other node : #mv...

Network Speedtest-cli is very slow from vm trough VM to the internet

iperf3 is not multithread (even with -P option), so check that you don't have 1core at 100%. iperf2 is multithread is you use multiple stream with -P (and increase queue in vm nic options) ksoftirqd is the handling of network interrupts. a vm can do around 2millions packet per second by...

    Proxmox Memory

Currently, windows allocate all memory at boot. (filling all memory pages with zero). The only way to release them, is to use balloning manually. (set min memory + shared=0). Note that ksm works also fine, when you reach 80% memory usage, I'll deduplicated all zeros memory pages, but it'll...

PVE8.1 - SDN (problematic) experiences and and other fun with IPv6 configurations

Hi, Thanks for all your reports could you open multiple separate bugs on bugzilla.proxmox.com ? I'll help to track fixes I never have tested evpn+vxlan in pure ipv6 network, only ipv4, because I known they was bugs 2years ago in frr ir kernel. I'll try to test it again. About...

Opt-in Linux 6.8 Kernel for Proxmox VE 8 available on test & no-subscription

Hi, I think this should be done by default (with an checkbox to disable it), each kernel/driver upgrade they are breaking name change. Note that using ethX can be dangerous from the systemd doc https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/latest/systemd.link.html "Note that specifying a...

Change machine type from i440fx to q35

q35 is a different virtual mother chipset, if your ubuntu is using predictable nic name, based on pci address, it's really possible that the nic name have change. maybe remove the nic first, reboot on q35, then readd the nic.

AMD Epyc based Single Node or Cluster

don't use consumer m2 ssd/nvme. You are going to burn them. (and with ceph, you'll have ceph monitor writing on them) you can use kingston SSD DC1000B m2 for example With ceph, you'll have a tittle bit more latency than with local disk. I'm around 0.125ms for read && 1ms for write.

Bugfix for EVPN SDN Multiple Exit Nodes

It's an gui bug forcing this field. a patch has been sent on the pve-devel mailing, but not yet commited https://lists.proxmox.com/pipermail/pve-devel/2024-February/061924.html as workaround, you can edit /etc/pve/sdn/zones.cfg , and remove the primary exit-node. Then apply sdn config.

New Import Wizard Available for Migrating VMware ESXi Based Virtual Machines

the 2TB is the limit of xen vhd format (yes, the format from 2010 ..) ^_^. The interesting part are the api calls example (I think about vmdk snapshot delta parsing for example), as vmware is almost a blackbox.

New Import Wizard Available for Migrating VMware ESXi Based Virtual Machines

xen-orchestra have done a vmware importer too last year, and AFAIK, they are taking a snapshot first, so a first sync, and stop the vm, and sync the delta. Maybe it could help to have more info about api && feature available in vmware...

    Restore single file without PBS?

no, you need pbs. if it's a homelab, you can install pbs directly on the same server than pve https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#install-proxmox-backup-server-on-proxmox-ve then create a pbs datastore on a nfs mountpoint and configure pbs as localhost in your pve.

New Import Wizard Available for Migrating VMware ESXi Based Virtual Machines

personnally, for my last migrations, I have simply install the drivers with virtio-win iso, when vm was still running on esx, and the vm was able to boot directly on virtio-scsi.

    Slow write on a VM

it's a 5400rpm ,so it's still slow than a 7200rpm. 224kB/s at 4k , it's around 56 iops . (I think they could reach 100~120 iops at 5400rpm) for fileserver it can be ok, but for vm (if you have multiple vms, they are send each their sync at different times. Do the more vm you'll have in...

    Slow write on a VM

maybe 190 is a little bit high, what is the result with 32 or 64 queues ? you should really look if you don't have a SMR disk for example: https://www.paradigit.be/western-digital-blue-smr-2-tb/20975485/product because you really don't want to use this for vms. (they are only good for cold...

    SDN EVPN external gateway

at work, we are using evpn using arista-router as evpn exit-node (on 3 DC datacenter), then each vm use proxmox anycast gateway. (so I can migrate the vm from any DC, and the traffic is always using the local router/anycast gw). Now, if you want to use opense/pfsense, they are no support of...

    Slow write on a VM

w=128KiB/s][w=32 IOPS .... maybe try to increase iodepth a little bit, but if it's an hdd, you shouldn't be able to reach more than 150~200 iops

    SDN EVPN external gateway

evpn network is a vxlan network. if you don't want to to vxlan directly on opnense (on L2 network), as gateway of your vm (on the same L2 subnet), if you want to do L3, use anycast gateway as gateway of your vms, and defined an exit-node on the zone (1 of your proxmox node), acting as a...
