I understand that to add IP aliases to a specific OpenVZ container that you simply add them through the GUI in a comma separated list. I tested this (using venet) and it works great.
However, I was wondering if there's a limit to the number of IPs that can be added this way? For example...
Thanks for the warning, Tom. According to this page: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Proxmox_VE_Kernel -- "Beginning with 1.6 the 2.6.32 is the default and recommended branch."
...which I suppose I incorrectly assumed meant it was "stable", and so now I have 2.6.32 running on a few machines.
That...
Thanks for all your insights, Sust. We are running simple apache/php/mysql setups, usually just one container per node. So, based on what you're saying here, it sounds like it will be stable. I will avoid doing anything very fancy on them... if we need something really special, then KVM is...
Thanks for confirming what I thought to be true about using unique VMIDs. I posted the thread you requested here:
http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/5950-Proxmox-OpenVZ-vs-Citrix-XenServer?p=33723
I'd love to hear about the problems you've had with OpenVZ so that I can watch out for them...
This is a reply to SuSt from this post: (http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/5913-Create-cluster-with-existing-OpenVZ-CT-on-node)
I started looking at OpenVZ after a friend shared his experiences of running his business under OpenVZ for quite some time now and has been quite happy with it. So...
Very good. Oh, and I tried the live migration feature... it worked flawlessly. Proxmox is awesome! I am converting over from Citrix XenServer... Proxmox + OpenVZ has a significant edge in my opinion.

After a few hours of digging to try to figure out why the node with the container on it had to be the master as you stated, I decided that perhaps you just missed the fact that I said the master was empty, so there was no chance of VMID conflicts.
And, since I really didn't want to make that...
Thanks for your reply.
Ok, assuming I am successful at creating the cluster by using the server with the container as the master, would I be able to then change which server is the master?
Curtis
So, I've got two proxmox machines that I want to turn into a cluster to make it easy to migrate OpenVZ containers between them. At the moment, one machine has no containers and the other machine has only one.
According to the documentation...
Never mind... I was simply comparing the values from vzfree and user_beancounters from my VM to that which other OpenVZ users had posted (non-proxmox users) and thought that the 9223372036854775807 values I was seeing in my output looked broken. Apparently, these are the normal default values...
As I've come to find out, you can't monitor swap memory usage using the usual "free" command in OpenVZ as it always reports zero. This is because swap is handled by the HN.
However, I found this great utility, vzfree, that is supposed to solve the issue. You can read about it here...
Thanks udo and jekader! You guys are great! And yes, it was a fresh/default install that my hardware vendor did, so it should be pretty straight forward. :-)
Curtis
Thanks for the tip. Also, after I restore network access to the machine, would it be necessary to set the IP again through the web interface so that proxmox is aware of the change (i.e. does proxmox uses a separate configuration file to store data for the web interface)?
So, my hardware vendor sent a proxmox box to my remote colo facility without setting the IP on my proxmox box first. Since this box will not have network access at first, I need to provide my "remote hands" service with instructions on how to properly set the ip in proxmox.
To have them change...
If I used iptables to block all access to the proxmox IP except for trusted addresses, would it have any effect on accessing the OpenVZ containers (which are on their own separate ips)? I know with Xen I was able to do that, but I'm still new to OpenVZ and wasn't sure whether iptables works the...
Sorry, I'm still pretty new to Proxmox, so I apologize if this question has already been addressed... Is Proxmox 1.7 something you can put on a public IP for remote management purposes, or is there some additional hardening that needs to be done before considering that?
Thanks,
Curtis
Very good... my main point was that I wasn't painting myself into a corner by installing proxmox on a smaller volume. As long as I know that I can still get to the rest of the space on the drives after the install, then I'm good (the server is going to a remote data center, making it pretty...
Thanks for the reply, Udo. Your mention of the maxroot parameter got me to do a little more searching and discovered that the 30GB volume that the first thread I linked to suggested is probably too small. I think I'll instead go with a 100GB volume and not limit the default root partition...
I'm installing Proxmox 1.7 on a system with raid 10 (adaptec 2405) and 4 2TB drives. I plan on using the system for OpenVZ containers and therefore will need to find a way around the 2TB limitation.
At least one person on this forum got around this limitation by carving out a 30GB volume to...
