proxmox ceph performance with consumer grade samsung ssd

Thank you thanks you i appreciate the reply. If i remember correctly it wasnt too bad until i started adding multiple vms. WOuld any consumer grade drive work reasonably well ? the cost differential is a bit steep when going to enterprise grade drives

...and sync writes, but those drives in particular are terrible for anything but PC archiving purposes due to it's small SLC cache and very slow QLC nand chips. It's hard to get more than ~40MBytes/s from each disk once the cache is full. Try to get your hands on some enterprise drives...

    IO Backpressure, mein Fehler

die bx500 sind richtig übel. unterste schublade für proxmox zusammen mit sämtlichen qlc ssds ohne dram cache. du könntest, wenn du schon nicht auf enterprise ssds umstellen willst, zumindest bessere consumer-ssds verwenden. hier gilt in der regel "you get, what you pay for", also je billiger...

    The SSD search continues ...

In the earlier post on this thread, you seem to focus on SLC but nobody makes SLC SSDs anymore. All SSDs use some of their (typically TLC or QLC) flash as an SLC cache and that does not differentiate consumer/gamer drives from enterprise ones. Try to find SSDs with Power Loss Protection (PLP) as...

    Ceph performance seems too slow

what exact nvme drives are you using? cheap consumer grade drives (maybe even with qlc?) or enterprise grade drives? exact brand and model will give us an idea of what to expect from the drives themselves. reason is that very cheap qlc drives can be slower than harddrives depending on io-pattern.

Proxmox installation stuck on 3% "Creating LV's" PLEASE HELP GUYS

...due to my Crucial P3. I've used that disk in two completely difference machines, and both times installing Proxmox stalls for a long time at the 3% mark. Perhaps it's because it's a DRAMless QLC? I don't use such a disk for my main nodes (normally I used these slow DRAMless ones as storage only).

Esxi migration starts fast then becomes really slow.

...) only mentions SLC cache. Many SSDs use part of the flash memory as SLC for short writes and then rewrite it to TLC or QLC. It looks like you bought consumer drives for a clustered enterprise hypervisor and it's no surprise that they don't perform great, but they do work and might be good...

...230S are 3d v-nand (TLC) as far as I can tell. Where did you get the information about them being SLC? Either way, they are not as bad as QLC but they are not as good as enterprise SSDs with PLP. Getting a write slow down is not uncommon (when the cache runs out) but there might be something...

Esxi migration starts fast then becomes really slow.

Do they have QLC flash memory? Then they get slower than old HDDs under sustained writes. Lots of threads about that on this forum. If not, then I don't know what causes this.

Proxmox 9.1 and extremely slow disk performance

The Crucial BX500 SSDs my be faster with a new disk and will slow down after usage. QLC mean the SSD Flash must store 4 Bit at once. Proxmox VE Version 9 is based on debian 13, so check the Internet about your Hardware and debian 13. Maybe you can install debian 13 on your system an run some...

Proxmox 9.1 and extremely slow disk performance

You ask why, Don't use Crucial - any more - and no Crucial BX500 drives. # https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/crucial-bx500-500-gb.d1179 No TLC Flash, BX500 use QLC Flash, No DRAM cache, only BX500 use SLC cache No SSD PLP - SSD Power Loss Protection. Use only Enterprise Drives.

    ZFS Pool Errors/high IO delay

With SMR drives (or QLC SSD), I would expect write errors (due to timeouts caused by the bad performance). The checksum errors suggest that there is another issue like cables (as already mentioned), controllers or even memory (but unlikely with errors on one drive only).

    ZFS Storage Inactive Since Reboot

...SSDs without PLP, it's common that data is lost by an unexpected power loss as they shuffle data around (like trim and flushing SLC cache to TLC/QLC flash) all the time. This is not specific for ZFS but can happen with all filesystems. I don't know why it would happen with a HDD but maybe WD...

Server-Disk I/O delay 100% during cloning and backup

if these are Samsung QVO, they are not suitable at all. QLC drives write very slow after cache (which is different from DRAM cache). There is plenty topics on the forum about it, mainly with ZFS because it reveals faster the slowness.

First backup of a single vm, to PBS runs VERY VERY slowly

I'll try to be brief, I scratched all storage in my PVE and re-installed with a dedicated 500GB sata ssd as a xfs disk as you suggested (Thanks). Then defined the 2 TB nvme drive as local-xfs used as vm and lxc storage. The second 500GB sata ssd is empty and awaiting use as future needs arise...

...very very heavy load yes. But I've seen "professional" dedicated rack servers with nvme life dropping like a stone. Keep in mind, that speeds of QLC drives are a different story. But they are not because this is "consumer grade", but because it's QLC. [edit] One more thing. Windows...
