Web GUI unavailable

If I could get in and see what's going on, I would be able to backup the vm's ...

Any suggestions?
I understand that you've already resolved your issue. Just to address this question ^ , you seemed to have had access via SSH. You can do everything via CLI, including VM backup.

Apologies for this prolonged silence but I've been travelling with limited connectivity.

Yes fortunately I had backups of my VM's so a restore post a fresh install worked like a dream.
