Need to migrate Windows VM raw disk to another storage

Hello community,

I am trying to migrate a 120gb windows raw vm disk from one local storage to another storage on a single Proxmox host 8.3.4. The issue is that I have some custom software which is licensed based on the machine parameters (ram size; disk; cpu; nic). I tried to migrate the disk (with the move storage option from the GUI) but it seems the raw disk file is recreated and the software detects it as changed hence the software license breaks. Is there another way to actually move the same disk without changing any parameters on it?

Thanks.

As with most software their customer support requires additional cost and subscriptions for assistance. The software is used only for archive reasons and must be kept for reference. Doesn't make sense to pay for its subscription and yearly support.

My question and wondering was simply why cloning/moving a disk drive is detected as a different disk and if there is a way to keep all disk parameters when moving so it is not detected as a different drive.

so, if I understand correctly, you're asking the forum for instruction on how to circumvent this other products protection mechanism. Maybe you can see how that's probably the wrong place to do so.

In any case, when you move a raw device it remains the same on the destination. The only pointer I can offer is if you're moving it from thick provisioned to a thin provisioned store there may be differences, but if your software has a means to detect it anyway its no longer a technical issue.

Probably related to raw disk size and the type of store, I will look into it. I am moving the disk from the internal proxmox store on nvme to a lvm thin provisioned hdd store.

And no I am not trying to circumvent protection mechanisms. I want to move a vm disk with already purchased software to another proxmox store. Unfortunately relicensing if vm is changed is not an option for me.

Thank you both for the suggestions.
