Low cost backup system for PVE?

Hi,

I currently don't have (against all common advices, I know) a valid backup system for my Proxmox home server (a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 with 4x3TB in a RAID-Z2).

This has basically economical reasons: I would love to run a cluster, for example, but don't have the ressources to buy additional 2 servers and maintain 3 servers in the end, especially related to energy costs.

Running a Proxmox Backup Server would only mean *one* additional system to maintain but according to the system requirements I should at least run a second MicroServer, means: buying at least two HDDs with at least 2x6TB size and overall doubling the energy costs (2 running servers).

If this is the only serious option, I have to do this step but I would like to ask for other strategies:
Maybe there is an ARM based solution which can idle the most of the time and starting the hard disks only once per week to make a weekly backup?
Or maybe there is a way to attach backup drives to my PVE server and running the PBS just in a virtual machine?

Thank you for any experiences and advices!

I use an Odroid Cloudshell 2 with 2x 16 TB HDDs in Raid, offsite. Once weekly, Proxmox connects via IPSEC, boots the Odroid, syncs data with rsync and borgmatic, and shuts down the Odroid afterwards.

Doesn't help me with the HDD costs, but keeps energy low and it is a pretty flexible setup.
