My bad, what I tried was upgrading the kernel (and that didn't work). I did not (and won't) try to downgrade it. I use the Community version of EVE-NG which is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and has seen no update in more than a year, so I thought it's a Community version-specific problem. Interesting...

Nope, changing to 5.11 kernel did not work for me.
