This is looking more like some kind of bug. I switched the bridge type from a Linux Bridge to an OVS Bridge and it just started working. Tagged frames can now be seen on the physical port as well.
Why would Linux Bridges not work? I understood they were the preferred method over OVS Bridges...

Appreciate the response. I have temp disk available that can hold the amount of actual data written in the images, but not the full raw images. Is the send & recv functionality going to need all of the space or just the used data? Reading about it it seems to be the former...
