I am running a single node on raid1c4 btrfs built on 4 usb flash drives. I had been using v7 because newer versions where braking pci passthrough. But because of cryptohackers I am upgrading (hopefully) to 9.2.
I already gave up running installer on nvidia 3090. Nomodeset does not help. I tried video=simplefb:off video=efifb:off nothing helped.
I was lucky to find old 1070 gpu.

Now installer gui works. Horray.
But it does not recognise the usb drives as place to install. Is that a purposeful joke ? lsblk shows them. May be I should go back to version 7.
It recognized an ssd over usb converter. But not my usb flash drives. I hope this is me missing some simple thing.

I wonder if software systems listen to us to know the worst time to break.

If all else fails then you could install Debian 13 first (which supports BTRFS, I assume) and Proxmox on top. I do hope your flash drives don't fail at the same time but you probably have experience with this kind of setup by now. If you stay up to date from now on and update/upgrade in place then you (hopefully) never need to reinstall Proxmox.

I hate to be that guy but installing Proxmox VE on an USB stick is not supported at all. (And never was.)

Only hard drives and/or SSDs are supported.
So it might just be that the installer does not see the USB sticks as that is not a valid medium and thus not listed.
I cant argue that I know much about the system. But actually you are wrong. I had installed Proxmox 7 using off the shelf installer on a btrfs raid on usb flash drives.
So it was possible. Probably somebody went through the hassle to explicitly disallow it. I wonder who voted for this "feature" in the meeting

Thank you, that is what I ended up doing. I needed to get it up and running fast so did not want to go into rabit hole that I dont know the depth. But luckily it worked fine. For now it seems fine. Hope nothing pops up from the dark corners of the system I never knew existed.
Ah I have not tested passthrough yet so fingers crossed.
